If current corporate tax reform efforts are successful, the resulting changes to the tax code will affect the amount of equity that can be raised from the low-income housing tax credit (LIHTC), according to a report, “Affordable Rental Housing After Tax Reform: Calculating Corporate Tax Reform's Possible Effects on Equity Raised from Low-Income Housing Tax Credits.”

Commonwealth Cornerstone Group, a nonprofit community development entity created by the Pennsylvania Housing Finance Agency, has secured $45 million in new markets tax credit (NMTC) allocations from the U.S. Treasury Department's Community Development Financial Institutions Fund.

The Wisconsin Housing and Economic Development Authority (WHEDA), through its Community Development Entity, the Greater Wisconsin Opportunities Fund, Inc. (GWOF), is the recipient of $35 million in New Markets Tax Credits (NMTCs) by the U.S. Department of the Treasury in the 2012 round of the NMTC program.

Over the last few decades, multiple bills, first calling for Housing Credit and Housing Bond permanence and then for their increased authority, have won the support of huge, bipartisan majorities in both the House and Senate and within the House Ways and Means and Senate Finance Committees. The programs were two of only three temporary tax programs Congress in 1993 determined merited permanence, maintaining then and since the temporary status of many other tax provisions.
